Actually it was UNC
the Sou Con limited schools to 10 games per year (like the Ivy League)
If you wanted to participate in a bowl, you had to schedule just 9 regular season games. Reference the years Washington and Lee, Tech did go to bowl games.
Unfortunately UNC played 10 regular and went bowling in the face of the conference.
The were placed on SoCon probation and only allowed to play one Southern Conf team the next year, NC State.
That sparked the creation of the ACC
Tech and VMI lead the pressure for the probation.
Now that is how I heard the story told.
